Hello! I am Rapper and Singer NAVY, and although I might look like a man to some people, I am a woman!!

Originally, I wanted to express a classy, sophisticated image through my stage name, so I chose NAVY. But now I feel the name helped turning my image to a more androgynic one. (laughing)

I used to listen to so many different genres of music, but when I first experienced rap music, I felt like it just hit me. I am also a singer, but at that time, I remember thinking “This is what I have to do!” when it came to rap.

Slick and Epik High, and especially the early Big Bang. When I saw them perform, I decided to do rap myself. I guess I have been affected a lot by their style of performance. Of course my music is different!

After I recorded my song [Take a breath] and uploaded it to the rap community, one person left a comment about how they could really relate to my lyrics and that listening to my music in the morning gave them relief. I had such a hard time then and couldn’t really get through, but this person’s comment helped so much that I am still incredibly grateful to them.. 

If it comes to my performances, the most memorable time was when there were only 2 or 3 people in the audience. I am pretty sure they must have felt foolish for coming.

I consider that comment I mentioned before my best moment, and also any other moment when I this kind of compliment. The most difficult moment for me is when I can’t write lyrics, when I just can’t get anything done. I experience this a lot, these moments when I have to really do something but it doesn’t work out. Then I fall into this hole, which is pretty hard on me every single time.

I have songs from a lot of different genres in my playlist, but out of all those I listen to Heize’s [underwater] the most I guess. While the music is so dreamy, I feel like anyone can understand what she wants to say with her music… That song is my recommendation.

For me music is something simple that becomes more complicated the more you learn about it (laughing). I actually thought when I graduate in applied music, I would have learnt everything there is to know about music, but it certainly is not like that. It’s a quite naïve thought. I would like to learn about more various fields!

I am currently in negotiations to use crowd funding to produce my next album. I would like to think that you can meet soon via my album. Please be patient! Anything besides the album I want to keep secret.
