Bring diversified Negro music together, Cho Young

I learned hard and got high scores in high school but it didn¡¯t make me happy. ¡°What do I study for?¡±, this question had become my worry for a long time. I asked for advice from secondary and high school teachers, went to some conferences. That time woke up my childhood dream and then, I started playing music (laugh)

Q. Welcome! Please introduce yourself.

Hello. I¡¯m a singer-songwriter, Cho Young, who does both composing, singing and loves many genres such as R&B, hip-hop, neo soul, jazz,¡¦ For future, I will approach to audiences by performances or sound sources.

Q. What¡¯s the special meaning of your stage name?

It¡¯s my real name without surname (laugh)

Q. How did you start your music career?

I learned hard and got high scores in high school but it didn¡¯t make me happy. ¡°What do I study for?¡±, this question had become my worry for a long time. I asked for advice from secondary and high school teachers, went to some conferences. That time woke up my childhood dream and then, I started playing music (laugh)

Q. What direction of music that you¡¯re pursuing?

My music direction is groove which is basically based on Negro music. Not focusing on any specific one, I want to play songs in diversified genres.

Q. Can you introduce us about your newly composed album?

[MusiCoreAmerica] my first product as solo musician after being member of Negro band in Korean and American. Title song, MusiCoreAmerica, shows musical connection between Korea and America by removing spaces. I used to play music in America so that I need a multilingual name. Then, this album has Our things, about chubby beauty; Anymore, the only song about breaking up and composed by Korean; Black Music which expresses love for Negro music. I only play my own style which is a combination of R&B, hip-hop, jazz, soul,.. By the time I published this album this year, there are many necessary works and also domestic performances. Please enjoy my songs!

Q. What¡¯s your favorite song?

It¡¯s my 3rd track, [Black Music]. Before publishing MusiCoreAmerica, I had improvisatory performance with Jamie Songs, producer of this album, and drummer Shawn Dustin. At the performance, only by singing, melodies and lyrics of this song was suddenly appeared and we decided to compose it. We recorded those things and made complete version later. Then, this song is supposed to be the popular one on Korean and American stage but it had become the ending song. I love this song because it contains my secret about music activities.

Q. How can you compose new songs? Is there any special place or thing for getting inspiration?

As I explained earlier, I compose songs via improvisatory performances. While travelling which is going to new places, inspiration easily comes to me. When I read again my feelings which were written in a diary or some changes in my mind, these moments are easily expressed by music. At first, I create common melodies and use phones for recording my ideas. Then, I used keyboard and composition program.

Q. What¡¯s the most memorable moment in your music career?

I had a performance with Jamie Song and some American friends at 2014. Then, we also had plan for Rooftop Bombers, a rooftop party at center of Hongdae. When American friends left Korea, I felt quite sad but also happy because we enjoyed music freely together. Actually, I had fallen in a slump for long times. This opportunity helped and gave me many valuable things by composing songs, performing, connecting with audiences and experiencing. So that, it becomes my most memorable moment.

Q. What¡¯s your plan/goal for future?

They¡¯re doing many performances, publishing songs, collaborating with hip-hop, jazz seniors and also with many artists. In the near future, I want to play music on diversified Korean festivals and expand to overseas market. Fighting!!
